Insect Succession Patterns on Decomposing Swine Carcasses in Tasmania: a Summer Study
نویسنده
چکیده
Insect succession patterns have been studied largely around the world by using thepredictable sequential arrival pattern of different insect species that become attracted to thedecomposing carcass at various stages of the decay. Currently, in some countries there areinsufficient studies detailing the seasonal variation of insect succession patterns ondecomposing remains. To date, there have been no published studies detailing insectsuccession patterns on decomposing remains in the Tasmania. This data is essential as itcan become invaluable during legal investigations, as it can be used in conjunction withexisting methods to assist in determining the time since death. The present research represents the first insect succession pattern study to beundertaken in Tasmania investigating the insect succession patterns on decomposing swinecarcasses (Sus scrofa domesticus Erxleben). For the purpose of this research, 3 swinecarcasses have been placed in two contrasting location sites in Tasmania, agricultural andsuburban, during the summer season. This study aimed to provide a preliminary database, detailing forensically important insects on decomposing carcasses within the Tasmania

Insect succession and decomposition of wildlife carcasses during fall and winter in Louisiana.
Fourteen fresh animal carcasses were monitored throughout decomposition in a mixed flatwood forest in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA, from 5 October to 7 December 1999 (fall) and from 18 January to 30 March 2000 (winter). Species composition and residency patterns of necrophilous insects were documented for four animal species per seasonal experiment: one Louisiana black bear (threatened species),...

This study examined pig carcasses buried at two different depths, 30 and 60 cm, to determine if insects were able to colonize buried carcasses, when they arrive at each depth, and what fauna were present over seven sampling dates to establish an insect succession database on buried carrion in East Lansing, MI. Thirty-eight pigs were buried, 18 at 30 cm and 20 at 60 cm. Four control carcasses we...
متن کاملDecomposition and insect succession on cadavers inside a vehicle environment.
This study presents differences in rate of decomposition and insect succession between exposed carcasses on the soil surface and those enclosed within a vehicle following carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Nine 45-kg pigs were used as models for human decomposition. Six animals were sacrificed by CO gas, half of which were placed within the driver's side of separate enclosed vehicles and half were...
متن کاملThe succession and development of insects on pig carcasses and their significances in estimating PMI in south China.
The succession of insect communities on carrion varies at local and global spatial scales. As such, ecological succession data obtained from corpses at one geographic location cannot necessarily be applied to other locations. Our study describes this succession in the far southern part of China to provide such data for forensic cases in this region. A total of 18 pig carcasses were placed in th...
متن کاملSuccession pattern of carrion-feeding insects in Paramo, Colombia.
The minimum postmortem interval can be estimated based on knowledge of the pattern of insect succession on a corpse. To use this approach requires that we take into account the rates of insect development associated with particular climatological conditions of the region. This study is the first to look at insect succession on decomposing carcasses in the high altitude plains (Paramo) in Colomb...
